How it works

WWOOF is an exchange program, allowing the exchange of volunteering for permaculture, organic farming, culture and life skills. It allows volunteers the opportunity to live, enjoy and help on a variety of organic, permaculture, sustainable living properties. Volunteers (WWOOFers) help on the project 4-5 hours a day and hosts provide food and accommodation in return.

Volunteers

WWOOF organizations link people who want to volunteer on organic permaculture farms, projects or eco-cultural smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help. WWOOF Thailand is backed by active online customer service and offers a secure, safe, lively and rewarding educational travel adventure, especially for low cost travelers in exotic rural Thailand. Real opportunities to help while experiencing an alternative and authentic way of life with Thailand its traditional values, culture, and people.

Usually you live with your host and are expected to join in and cooperate with the day to day activities. In most countries the exchange is based on 4-6 hours help-fair exchange for a full day’s food and accommodation. You may be asked to help with a variety of tasks like sowing seed, making compost, gardening, planting, cutting wood, weeding, harvesting, packing, milking, feeding, fencing, making mud-bricks, wine making, cheese making and bread making and whole lot more!!

Volunteers often say, “We like giving something back to the country we are traveling in”.

The length of your stay is negotiated directly between you and your host. Most WWOOF visits are between one and two weeks, though some may be as short as two or three days or as long as six months. All hosts must offer one position free to WWOOFers, however if this position is full, some hosts take extra volunteers for a small fee. Also some hosts offer more than just volunteering and cultural exchange. Some offer education in, Yoga, meditation, Permaculture, Thai massage, Thai fruit carving, herbs and herb processing, Natural building, Aquaculture, traditional medicine, Thai cooking, Thai music and Art and for these extra services they may request a small fee. If so it is “always” stated up front and it is usually small to off set the costs. An example is a Elephant rescue center where the fee goes towards rehabilitation and feed.

Hosts

Hosts say they ” like the world coming to me” by opening up their homes, families and sharing their lifestyle with others.

Volunteers can provide an extra pair of hands to help with various projects you are busy with. Many of our hosts practice Permaculture or Bio-dynamic growing methods. Some hosts make a living off their land, others are homesteaders interested in self-sufficiency, some are families others are individuals. There are also cooperatives, communities and eco- villages.

WWOOF hosts are organic farmers and growers. They enjoy passing on their knowledge of sustainable and organic practices. Volunteering with a WWOOF host is about helping on an organic food property and learning and experiencing organic and bio-dynamic farming, natural building, food forests, water harvesting, grey water management, soil building, composting and gardens. Host improve the world by helping grow, sustainable living skills, food sovereignty, healthy communities and healthy food.

Hosting volunteers is rewarding to both parties, demonstrating an alternative way of life and skills, very different from what most are used to, it is a true adventure. Some volunteers are so inspired by the experience that they end up changing their lifestyles and even setting up their healthy food garden’s, becoming a citizen of the world, and some find their mission in life.  As a host you are improving communication and aiding growth within the organic movement and creating a better more related world.
